NSW Phoenix Head Coaches Named for AVSL

Published Fri 28 Jul 2023

The 2023 Scape Australian Volleyball Super League season is upon us and its time to get behind our NSW Phoenix!

Volleyball Australia has been working in close partnership with the six state and territory volleyball associations who hold licences for the foundation teams, developing an innovative League which will be exciting in a family-friendly live environment and adapt strongly to a national television audience.

Today we are proud to announce the 2023 Head Coaches of the NSW Phoenix.

Leading the NSW Phoenix Men’s team as Head Coach is a prominent figure in our community, Antony Rowda.

Known around the courts as Rowda, he made is way to the sport of Volleyball after a season ending injury in junior rugby and hasn’t looked back.  Rowda is a Commercial lawyer who started with Sydney Uni Volleyball Club and remains with the club to this day.  He has 15 years of experience playing volleyball, 11 years coaching and has been involved with AVL for 6 years. The linguistically diverse Rowda has learnt four languages and is inspired by trying to get better everyday and making others around him better.

‘I think my personal and team goal for the 2023 season is creating a collaborative and inclusive environment which sets a cultural tone and direction, not only for this year’s playing group but also for those moving forward,’ Rowda said.

The 2023 NSW Phoenix Women’s Head Coach is our very own Chris Todd.

Toddy is current the Head Coach of the NSW Phoenix Pathway and has been involved in the sport for 20 years.  He has been coaching volleyball full time for 9 years.  His AVL career includes 13 seasons playing and 7 coaching.  Toddy began his volleyball journey as a means of getting out of studying for exams and loved it so much that he kept playing.  He is inspired by people that are passionate about what they are doing and is excited about working this season with the Phoenix Women’s Team.

‘My team goal for this year is to build a strong sense of culture amongst the Phoenix Team to inspire the current and future generations of players.  Personally, my goal is to ensure that the players learn something new every session,’ said Toddy.

The schedule for the season has been released, confirming that the new-look competition will launch on Saturday, 12 August, where our NSW Phoenix take to the road with a blockbuster away match against the Perth Steel, leading into five action-packed rounds of elite Volleyball across the country.

This season the NSW Phoenix will be hosting two home games at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park with first serve at 6pm:
