Celebrating International Day of People with Disability

Today, Volleyball NSW proudly joins the celebration of International Day of People with Disability, a day dedicated to promoting inclusion and recognising the achievements of people with disabilities in sport and beyond.

We’re excited to share some incredible milestones within our NSW community that highlight our commitment to providing an accessible and inclusive sport.

Sitting Volleyball in Schools

This term, Volleyball NSW launched the Sitting Volleyball Sporting Schools Program, giving students across NSW the chance to experience this dynamic and inclusive sport. One standout example was at the International Maarif School of Australia – Auburn Campus, which paired the program with its Disability Awareness Month initiative.

The school’s sport teacher suggested incorporating sitting volleyball into the sessions to provide students with a hands-on opportunity to learn about the sport and its significance in promoting inclusion. The result? Students had an amazing time trying sitting volleyball for the first time, embracing the challenge and having plenty of fun along the way.

NSW Team at the First Sitting Volleyball National Championships

Another exciting milestone for our Sitting Volleyball Program is here—our very first NSW Phoenix Sitting Volleyball Team is set to compete in the Sitting Volleyball National Championships this weekend, December 6–7! This marks a historic moment for adaptive volleyball in both New South Wales and Australia.

The championships will take place on the Gold Coast, QLD, where teams from across the country will go head-to-head in what promises to be an intense and inspiring competition.

Congratulations and best of luck to our selected athletes!

ParaTough Cup with Harvey Norman and Paralympics Australia

Harvey Norman recently partnered with Paralympics Australia to host the ParaTough Cup, an inspiring team-building event where corporate teams competed in adaptive sports including wheelchair basketball, goalball, and sitting volleyball. This initiative highlighted the power of sport to break down barriers and promote inclusion.

Volleyball NSW was proud to play a key role by introducing sitting volleyball to a new audience. We were fortunate to have NSW sitting volleyball athlete and Para-sport pioneer Japhy Duldig join forces with our Senior Participation Manager, Lucas Paulino, to lead the sessions and showcase the sport’s accessibility and excitement.

At Volleyball NSW, we believe sport is for everyone. These achievements are just the beginning as we continue to create opportunities for all athletes to thrive.
