South Coast Stars Mireille & Lacey Return Home with NSW Phoenix

This weekend, the South Coast will host elite volleyball action as NSW Phoenix takes on Adelaide Storm—and for two of our women’s players, it’s a homecoming filled with pride, memories, and community spirit.

Mireille Smith and Lacey Bruce, both South Coast locals, are set to represent NSW Phoenix in front of the very crowd that helped shape their volleyball journeys. Their return marks a powerful moment for regional volleyball and a celebration of the pathways that exist beyond the metro centres.

Mireille Smith: Rising Star with Deep Local Roots

Born in Callala Beach, Mireille Smith is a  promising young talents in Australian volleyball. At just 17, she has already represented NSW and Australia in both indoor and beach volleyball formats. Mireille was named the 2022/23 Volleyball Athlete of the Year by the Illawarra Academy of Sport, and has won gold at the Australian Junior Championships in the Under 19 Women’s Division 1 with the NSW Phoenix Program.

She currently plays as a universal for NSW Phoenix and has competed in the Australian Volleyball Super League, NSW All Schools Open team, and Combined High Schools Open team. Mireille is also a Spikeroos Youth Coach, a referee, and a passionate advocate for inclusive volleyball programs on the South Coast.

“Even though I train elsewhere, this is where I grew up and fell in love with volleyball. The support from family, friends, and the community makes every point feel even more special.”- Mireille Smith

Her journey began in Thursday night social comps, playing alongside adults and her now-teammate Lacey.

“They helped guide me and become a better volleyball player when I first started playing.”- Mireille Smith

Mireille credits mentors like Nic and Sean Thorpe for their belief and guidance, and encourages young athletes to embrace opportunities—even if it means travelling for training.

🏐 Lacey Bruce: Veteran Middle Blocker with Shoalhaven Spirit

Lacey Bruce, a middle blocker for NSW Phoenix, has been part of the South Coast volleyball scene for over 15 years. Her journey began in the Shoalhaven social comps, where she was thrown into A-grade play without knowing the rules—but quickly fell in love with the sport.

“It was the best introduction to volleyball I could’ve had. Just a bunch of people of all ages and skill levels thrown together to play. We loved it, and still do.”- Lacey Bruce

Lacey has competed in both indoor and beach volleyball, including multiple podium finishes in the NSW Beach Volleyball Tour. She’s been a consistent presence in the NSW Phoenix squad since 2022, and her experience and leadership continue to inspire younger players.

“It’s a privilege to be able to come back and play at home after so many years away.”- Lacey Bruce

She credits local coaches and players for encouraging her to trial for Sydney clubs and state teams—opportunities that weren’t readily available in the region at the time.

“Without their continued support, I probably would have never discovered these great opportunities I’ve been blessed to have experienced.”- Lacey Bruce

Her advice to young athletes?

“Just give it a go. Like anything in life that you love, you don’t know that you love it until you first try it.”- Lacey Bruce

This weekend’s AVSL clash is more than just a game—it’s a celebration of the South Coast’s volleyball legacy and the athletes who continue to inspire the next generation.
