Volleyball NSW at the Pride in Sport Australia Summit: Building Inclusion Through Connection

Earlier this month, Volleyball NSW proudly participated in the Pride in Sport Australia Summit held at UNSW — a powerful and thought-provoking event that brought together leaders, advocates, and community voices to explore the future of inclusion in sport.

Volleyball NSW staff members Lachlan Marsh (Membership, Affiliation and Inclusion Manager), Joella Hansen(Operations Manager) and Lucas Paulino (Senior Particiaption Manager) attended the Summit, joining a diverse group of changemakers committed to creating safer, more inclusive sporting environments. The day was filled with raw and honest conversations, highlighting the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in sport and the ongoing challenges they face. These stories were not only moving but also deeply motivating, reminding us why inclusion must be more than just policy — it must be practice.

“Events like this leave you with more questions than answers — in the best way. They spark ideas, challenge assumptions, and most importantly, create space for real connection.” Lachlan Marsh- Membership, Affiliation and Inclusion Manager

A special thank you goes to Benjamin Cork, whose behind-the-scenes work ensured the Summit was welcoming, purposeful, and community-driven. His thoughtful approach helped foster an environment where meaningful conversations could thrive.

We were also thrilled to be joined by Andrew Wilmot from Freezone Volleyball, NSW’s leading LGBTQ+ volleyball club. Andrew’s presence added a vital grassroots perspective, showcasing the power of community leadership in driving inclusion forward.

At Volleyball NSW, we’re proud to stand alongside our partners and community members in championing diversity and inclusion. We believe that sport should be a place where everyone feels safe, seen, and supported — and we’re committed to making that vision a reality. Rebecca Walter Volleyball NSW Intrium CEO echoes this committment:

"Inclusion isn’t just a value we talk about; it’s something we continue to actively build into every part of our organisation. The Pride in Sport Summit was a powerful reminder that real change starts with listening and learning. Volleyball NSW is proud to stand with our community in creating safe spaces where everyone belongs."

The Summit was a timely reminder that real change happens through relationships, dialogue, and a willingness to keep showing up. We’re excited to continue this journey and to keep learning, listening, and leading with purpose.
