Youth Beach Phoenix Program

2023/2024

The VNSW State Team program is split into three distinct phases:

  1. Pre-Season – October to December
  2. Selection Phase– Maroubra Trials, December Camp and Youth Beach State Championships
  3. Team Training and Competition Phase – January to March

PRE-SEASON

Activities are open to any athlete interested in being considered for selection to the Youth Beach Phoenix program.

Athletes are encouraged to train and play locally while competing in local and state beach volleyball events. Athletes are open to playing with anyone and are encouraged to partner with multiple players in varying positions to support their development.

SELECTION PHASE

The Squad Phase will consist of 3 essential activities for athletes to be eligible to be selected for the 2024 Youth Phoenix Beach Team.

1. November 5 Age group trial and season information session @ Maroubra Beach
2. December 15-16 Squad Camp @ Wonoona Beach
3. December 17 NSW Youth Beach State Championships @ Wonoona Beach

 

It is highly reccommended that Athletes aspiring to represent NSW at the National Championships participate in all 3 activities to be selected for their age group

Youth Beach Phoenix Age Group Trial November 5th @ Maroubra Beach

The Youth Beach State Team trial process will begin with a trial session on Maroubra beach Sunday, November 5th.

This trial will allow VNSW to onboard trialing athletes into the Phoenix Membership across all age groups, begin selection through targeted athlete assessments for each age group, and to provide athletes with direct education about Phoenix gameplay.

Boys U14-U18 – 12-2PM

Girls U14-U18 - 2-4PM

This session will be a 2hr activity that will consist of 3 stations

  1. On-court skill session - coaches will rate athletes on their ball control in passing, setting, attacking and serving.
  2. Off-court gameplay education – coaches will lay out the age-appropriate game style and skill standards for state team selection
  3. Anthropometric Measurements – athletes will be measured in height, arm span, standing reach, stationary jump, approach jump, speed and agility

Registrations Closed

Due to the increase in demand for Youth Beach and the high number of expected trialling athletes this trial will require an exemption if you are unable to attend. All information and data gathered from this trial activity will support athletes in their bid for Youth Beach Phoenix.

Please note that the selection phase of Youth Beach Phoenix requires that athletes also enter the Squad Camp and Youth Beach State Championships in order to be eligible for selection.

Toowoomba NDP Camp Athletes must participate in this trial as the VA camp in December conflicts with the Squad Camp.

Trial Exemption - Athletes who are unable to attend this session must communicate their inability to attend this trial with the VNSW head office.

Youth Beach Phoenix Squad Camp December 15-16th @ Wonoona Beach

This 2-day activity will provide age-appropriate game-based training. Each of the days will consist of two training blocks that will be led by Phoenix Coaches and will serve to upskill and challenge athletes in a skill-based environment.

Friday 1-7 PM – Camp for U14-U18 athletes

Saturday 8 AM-1 PM  - Camp for U14-U18 athletes

Youth Beach State Championships December  16-17th @ Wonoona Beach

The State Championships will be a single-day event for U14/U15 and a two-day Championship for U16-U18 aged athletes. On Saturday the Squad Camp will proceed in the morning with the State Championships officially starting in the early afternoon.

Saturday, December 16th

  • U14/U15 Pool Play and Championship Finals
  • U16/U18 Modified pool play

Sunday, December 17th

  • U16/U18 Championship rounds

The winning athletes in each age group at the VNSW Youth Beach State Championships will be selected for the Team Phase. This is NOT a pairing selection. Championship winners will secure their selection as individuals and then will be paired based on their Youth State Championship performance, the Squad camp, and other partnership and age group considerations.

Selection to Youth Beach Phoenix

  1. Trials - Skills and Anthropometric measurements
  2. Squad Camp – Ball control, player ability relating to the Phoenix playing style
  3. Youth Beach State Championships – Championship play and competitiveness

2023/2024 Youth Beach Team Selections will be made on December 20th

For the 2023/2024 season, the individual and team selections will happen prior to the holidays. This is to provide guidance so teams have a longer preparation window through training and competitions. Phoenix Coaching staff will select athletes and pair partnerships to the degree possible. Some pairing decisions may need to happen in the first Team Camp on January 27-28.

Sky Team – Teams will be selected based on the Squad phase (where possible).

Navy Team – Individuals will be selected for the team camp in January where they will be partnered.

TEAM TRAINING AND COMPETITION PHASE

The Team phase is the final stage of the Youth Beach Phoenix program where only selected athletes (both travel and non-travel shadow) train, play, and compete in a set calendar of activities leading into the National Championships. This phase is a blend of VNSW led camps as well as beach competitions with support from Youth Beach Phoenix coaches.

This phase is only available to those selected for it and is covered in the Youth Beach Phoenix program levy.
